A new testosterone cream intended to boost women's libido was tested at the University of Virginia.
LibiGel is an ointment by BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc. gives all women suffering from decreased sexual desire the possibility to have a satisfying sexual encounters.
A Viagra-like drug is not a pill, but a cream containing testosterone that is applied on the arm and becomes effective after 24 hours. The LibiGel will be prescribed to women who have hypoactive sexual desire.
As much as 100 medical institutions will test the drug's safety and efficacy.
Dr. Anita Clayton, a psychiatrist with the University of Virginia Health System said that decreased libido is very common and affects one third of women. Many women who will participate in trials suffer from lack of libido, have their ovaries removed and take estrogen supplement.
Lack of sexual desire due to surgical removal of the ovaries where testosterone is produced often leads to decrease in sexual interest. And while male body produces about ten times more testosterone than female body, testosterone plays an important role in sexual functioning both for men and women.
LibiGel comes in a form of cream that is rubbed into the skin of the upper arm. It takes about 24 hours for the drug to become active, increasing women's libido. Specialists say that this drug is more effective than previous Viagra-like since it produces constant levels of testosterone.
After the second clinical trials that were conducted at 17 institutions, there was 283 percent increase of satisfying sexual encounters reported.
