Lubricants may considerably decrease sperm's ability to swim, scientists said. Almost a third and a half sexually active couples use personal lubricants. The study conducted by , Dr Ashok Agarwal from the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio and her colleagues showed that the use of vaginal lubricants may deteriorate sperm quality.
During the study the researchers tested four commercially available lubricants (FemGlide, Pre-Seed, Replens, and Astroglide) to find their effect on sperm motility and sperm chromatin integrity - the complex of genetic material that makes up chromosomes. Semen samples of 12 men were taken during the tests. As a result, sperm motility in three lubricants Replens, Astroglide, and FemGlide decreased in 30 minutes. The sperm chromatin integrity also lowered after the sperm was exposed to FemGlide and K-Y Jelly.
Scientists concluded that even water-based lubricants that are spermicides-free may affect sperm quality, decreasing its motility and chromatin integrity. One of the lubricants called Pre~Seed had less damage to sperm motility and chromatin integrity, which is explained by the fact that it had more physiologic pHand isotonic formula.
A lot of women use personal lubricants during sexual intercourse to eliminate vaginal dryness - a common problem, which makes sexual contacts uncomfortable. Nowadays, women can use lubricants to make sexual intercourse smoother and more pleasant.
Most lubricants are water-based, which make them compatible with condoms and sex toys. However, women who are trying to conceive should avoid using lubricants as their chances for conception can be quite low due to the fact that lubricants make sperm less motile.
